Lakeside Summer Home

from My Northwest Home by Wes Weddell

about

My wonderful hosts in Spokane—the “Lilac City”—showed me a journal that ‘came with’ their house, which documents summers spent on nearby Lake Coeur d’Alene (Idaho) from the years 1906-10. The women in this party spent nearly the entirety of May through August on the lake, while their husbands—some of whom appear to have been prominent citizens in turn-of-the-century Spokane—arrived Saturdays and left Monday mornings all summer long. The text of the journal reads rather blandly (“Warm day today…”), but this only serves to make its pages a more real, candid snapshot of someone’s actual life. Several newspaper clippings are also sandwiched between some of the pages. Every place name in the final chorus comes from somewhere in the journal: ‘Okabena’ appears to be the name of the lodge, or “colony,” where these individuals spent the majority of their time; the ‘Lurline’ was the family’s boat. In the latter stages of the chronology, several off-season entries appear, usually around holidays. Admittedly, some of the emotion of the song comes from my own experience as a summer camp counselor on the same lake, as I could draw little explicit sentiment from the journal itself!
