Row, Row Your Boat

from My Northwest Home by Wes Weddell

/

about

I was approached mid-project by the UW Office of Undergraduate Education to compose a song for retiring Dean Fred Campbell. As I sat in a meeting with some of his close friends, family, and colleagues, I was struck by the extent to which Dean Campbell had touched these individuals’ lives—and the affectionate eloquence with which they were able to place these effects into words. The more I probed, the more I discovered that Dean Campbell’s life had the very elements of charm and intrigue that I was looking for in my project songs—heck, the man rowed himself to campus for years (on a boat named ‘The Undergraduate’)! Here indeed was a fascinating regional character right under my nose.
