Moving On Without Us

about

The building that houses the clock tower in downtown Bellingham was built in the early 1890s as a symbol of prosperity for the newly-united towns of Whatcom and Sehome. Unfortunately, the depression of 1893 hit before the city could purchase works for the clock in what was then City Hall and is now the Whatcom Museum of History and Art. Painted hands on all four clock faces permanently read 7:00 until “high winds and sketchy maintenance” destroyed the faces themselves. In the 1940s, the building became the Whatcom Museum, and new faces appeared. This time, the painted hands represented different moments from the American historical past—one face was painted to the minute that President Franklin Roosevelt died. Fire destroyed the tower in 1962, and battery-driven clocks were installed with the new tower in 1974; the clock was finally running, but it had still never seen the mechanical works for which it was originally designed. The Tosco Corporation finally installed mechanical works in 1995—102 years after the building opened—but the works were situated at too far a distance from the clock faces in order to also function as a museum exhibit, and thus the clock encountered more difficulties. Now, museum staff members swear that they’re close to having it up and running.
